MUMBAI: Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor(pic), who ruled the late 1950s and 1960s with his unique style and versatile range, passed away early Sunday at the Breach Candy Hospital here, The Times of India quoted family sources as saying.
He was 79. He is survived by his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj and daughter Kanchan Desai.
He had told the media a few years ago that he was on dialysis three times a week.
He was admitted to the ICU of the hospital on Saturday, The Times of India reported.
The actor was part of Bollywood's legendary Kapoor family. His father was film and theatre actor Prithviraj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were his brothers.
He made his debut in Bollywood in 1953 with the film 'Jeevan Jyoti' and carved a niche for himself with the superhit Junglee' in 1961.
Shammi Kapoor won the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1968 for his performance in 'Brahmachari'.
