Governor Rotimi Amaechi defeats Jang to return as Governors’ Forum Chairman

Contrary to the expectation of the public that Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State may not return as the Chairman of the Governor’s forum, owing to the ongoing political tussle with President Jonathan, The Rivers state Governor has again been re-elected as the chairman of the Forum, defeating his opponent, Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State by 3 votes.

Mr. Amaechi won 19 votes from the 35 Governors present, while Mr. Jang, a late entrant to the competition garnered 16 votes. Only one Governor was absent.

After the success of the first two birthday celebrations respectively, in honour of Nollywood Icon, Fred Amata's 50th birthday, today is the 3rd and final celebration.

There will be a white tie dinner party and His Excellency Governor Fashola of Lagos State, will also be there to honour us with his presence. Those of us that were at Fred Amata's first party hosted by City People two weeks ago and witnessed Zik Zulu Okafor, an accomplished producer and known orator, eloquently deliver a eulogy about Fred and the entire Amata family that would make Historians envious, would be excited to also read what well respected Nollywood director and critic, Charles Novia, has to say about Fred. FOR FRED AMATA @ 50

I first met Fred Amata on television in 1989. It was the music video of King Sunny Ade's and Onyeka Onwenu's 'Choices', a family planning public enlightenment campaign. My first thought when I saw the young, handsome fellow on the screen was that he looked a bit like the then popular Zack Amata of the hit Nigerian soap opera, 'Behind the clouds'. Later, I discovered that he's Zack's younger brother and a 'No wonder!' sentence escaped from my lips.

No wonder what? At that time I didn't know why I made that sentence but after having known Fred Amata for close to twenty-five years professionally and eighteen years personally, more 'No wonder' bursts have come out of me over this Fred ever since.

When I first met Fred Amata in person at the grounds of the Nigerian Television Authourity in 1995, he was impeccably dressed and had a glittering fair complexion, with a boyish smile and a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. Someone told him I was an ex-National President of the Nigerian Universities Theatre Arts Students Association and Fred shook me warmly as if I was a Nobel Prize Winner. He was warm and very receptive. That first meeting made me take a liking to him.

I met him a few more times after that over the next couple of years and as my reputation as a script writer was steadily growing while I was still 'experimenting and learning' at NTA, he would always stop to chat with me and ask me if I was writing anything new. Fred has an innate respect for intellect and while he's grossly misunderstood by many people, he is very intelligent with an impressive ability to write screenplays himself and a powerful speaker with a good command of the English Language.

With a very friendly disposition, an open minded personality laced with streaks of the heroic flaws of the Dionysian characters all Theatre scholars know so well, Fred Amata could be said to be as human as God created any other. I deliberately alluded to his heroic flaws, as perceived by me, because I have silently de-constructed and re-constructed Fred Amata over the years. His tragic flaw, which is a positive quality to me, is his very friendly disposition and his willingness to make new friends every minute. Fred takes over a gathering whenever he's around and livens up the place! He receives people he doesn't even know warmly and is always ready to listen to anybody. And he's generous, both in giving and in warmth. Characters don't come any tragic than that, do they?

Still 'no wonder' that as open and warm as Fred is, he's easily irritated and flippant when situations piss him off and then he gets very acidic in his comments and very stubborn. Sometimes, a tad too stubborn.

When Fred gets that way, you cannot budge him. Like the Olumo Rock he would argue his point and if one has a counter-argument, he has a famous quip to drive home his point, 'Why do you think I would in any way accept your opinion?' And then the arguments continue till one person flops out and most of the time, it wouldn't be Fred! But all his friends love him that way. Rather, I should speak for myself! Lol.

All through these years, Fred welcomed me into his circle and through him, I became a friend and family member to his brothers, Uncle Zack, Ruke and his nephew Jeta in a bond of artistic and kindred proportions. Fred is a man who loves his children and would always beam with pride each time he talks about them, all three of them. I have been privileged to share great artistic and personal moments with Fred Amata. Its a privilege I cherish and don't take for granted. Like all great artistes, Fred has a gift and a curse. (Don't we all?) Its just an irony that his curse is actually his gift! And as a nation, Fred is actually a gift to our cultural sector. He's one of the pioneers of Nollywood as we know it, having been involved in the birth and shaping of an industry which though acclaimed to have 'grown from nothing', is actually an off-shoot of the foundations laid by his late father, John Efoghale Amata, who featured in the first movie shot in colonial Africa titled 'Freedom'.

As hard as it is to believe, Nollywood is actually a close-knit family, daggers and all. Fred is a pater familias figure to many in the industry who look up to him. My story about knowing him is just one of thousands who have inspiring tales of their friendship with Fred.

A few days back, at the novelty football match organised to kick start Fred's fiftieth birthday at the Campus Square Stadium, celebrities, ex-footballers and a motley crowd of well-wishers came in large numbers to honour the man. It was an impressive event. And with Fred, sometimes its hard to distinguish the man at fifty from the boy of fifteen. Whilst on the pitch, he would dance, shout, hail friends and play football simultaneously. I had to scream out 'Agbaya' at a point!

If Fred Amata is not an 'Agbaya' who has commendably re-defined the meaning of the word, then someone tell me why he participated in the 'Celebrity Takes Two' dancing reality show four years ago as the oldest contestant and so impressed the judges and viewers with his dancing skills that he came second! And for those who crave for pleasant surprises in a party, pray to see Fred on the dance floor as he displays his dancing skills from the past to the present. He dances the 'Azonto' fluidly, as if he was born to do it. And what wasn't Fred Amata born for, come to think of it? Acting? Directing? Writing? A sprinkle of more greatness is what's left to fulfil his destiny.

So, its no wonder that as Fred Amata celebrates his fiftieth birthday, the entertainment industry, politicians , fans and friends would look back at a career of excellence in acting and directing as well as a triumph of will and ambition and clink glasses and shout 'Cheers' to the maestro @ fifty. And as Fred receives and opens his packages, Nigeria acknowledges that he is a package we all collectively have received all through these years. We just didn't bother to open him. Till now.

WOW!!! Charles Novia has really said it all and hit the nail on the head concerning the Fred that I have known for over two decades.

This tribute is so touching and takes me wayyyy back. I must add that Keppy and NY Ekpenyong were responsible for my very first introduction to Nollywood way back in 1993 when myself and NY were best of friends {we still are btw :-) } and that was how I met Fred and Ruke Amata, Matthias Obahiagbon, Obi Osotule, Victoria Inyama and many others, as we gathered frequently at Keppy's in Surulere.

I left Nigeria later that summer to return to England, but we all kept in touch over the years and met periodically and ironically, when I returned to Nollywood four years ago, 'Celebrity Takes Two' for which I handled Fred's campaign and PR, was one of my first 'come-back' projects; so we go back a long way and whenever you see me with any of these BIG BOYS OF NOLLYWOOD, make una no find my trouble oh cos I'm like their lil sister and they don't joke with me! Hehehe! *only joking :-)*

Charlyboy: The Gothic Me

The gothic mind is a limitless mind but you may choose to refer to me as creepy and weird. Why don’t you call me an individual with no particular direction? I’m here, far from you because the society has a limited philosophy and ideology. I stand afar from the scene because; I wouldn’t want to be limited by its inability to get out of the box. I want to remain outside of that limited-tiny box. Your world is too small for me to exist. I need a better space, even beyond the horizon. FREEDOM! Yes, freedom is all I seek, to simply break out of societal constriction. I’m unwaveringly flying like an urufia bird; you don’t know that name, because you are not free.

To start the story of my freedom, you must know this. Simply put, the society is a group of people with collective interest, though this could vary from community to community. However, every society must have collective ideas on morality, ethics and politics. Lord Devlin said, “the bonds which holds a society together are not physical but invisible bonds of common thought. If the bonds of a society were too far relaxed, members would drift apart. A common, morality is part of the bondage. The bondage is part of the price of the society; and mankind which needs society, must pay its price.”

But far from it, the Australian Values Study Section 35 submits, “one of the greatest problems of our time however, is that elites in politics, society, media and even in some religious organizations have turned their backs on the traditional conceptions of right and wrong. Some have done so deliberately- others support ideas and causes which have (for them) the unintended effect of undermining values to which they are committed.”

My fear however in this article as relatively tied to the above values study, is that if the institutors of these values and laws break them every now and then, how can other members of the society adhere or stay committed to these values and laws? A question, we can’t discard in this our “yarn”

Based on the Judeo-Christian section 18:2, “people have to feel connected to a shared moral community. There is a yearning for morality that invariably is genetic-and far too many of us in this society have a hole in our souls because, day to day, it just isn’t there.”

Though laws and values are necessary factors in the society to help curtail anarchy, how do we justify that these common laws and values instituted by some cabal in the society are actually what truly defines one as living right or wrong? And how those following a particular trend or pattern determine your being right or wrong?

The society gave a structure of how life should be lived so there would be order, it didn’t state that we all must use the same pattern to arrive at what we all term as moral.

In every society, there are a set of people who stand out, regardless of any situation, they like to be referred to as the free thinkers or the gothic minds. Goths are mostly individuals who live their lives the way they want to, not conforming to a particular style; the way most people are subjected or told to live their lives. They are a group of people who listen and make up their own minds rather than accept the moral rules of the society because they are told to do so. Because many people are conformed to one style of living, these free thinkers are often rejected in the society. Many people have developed a misconception of who goths are, a lot of people term them as satanic or cultists because of their mode of dressing or approach to certain things in life. Fundamentally speaking, these are not true. Being different, taking another pattern, living their lives regardless of what others think does not make this free thinkers immoral or devoid of values. They only do what they do, the way they know how to do it. Goths have open mind and that’s what makes them unique and exceptional, they’ve refused to have enclosed minds like every other person in the society. These people are intelligent, they see beyond what ordinary eyes can see. Being a goth does not require any specific qualification, goths all have different interest, hobbies, fashion sense, religion, different occupation such as doctors, lawyers, tradesmen, even down to the common man. Their life style may vary, but their exceptional way of reasoning, their free way of thinking makes them stand out. Believably true, most goths have a high level of intelligent quotient. Because their thinking is quite deep, the public see them as weird, but that’s the beautiful path of being a goth. There are never afraid of coming out openly about who they really are or how they feel. Sadly, Undisputable is the fact that goths are people like everyone else even though they are distinct. Can the society freely express what bothers it without having some gothic traits? How can we ask political leaders questions when we conceal our thoughts in pretense? I express myself, and I ask question, because I want to be free at all time.

The brand, my brand has survived the test of time, because of its eccentricity and its ability to reason outside the box, process and analyze anything it hears or sees (Politics or whatever). Many have misconstrued who I’m, ‘but I no send una’. Some people are against why I act young, dress young or look young. Is there any rule that we must act certain ways when we get to certain age and what makes people think acting old when you are old justifies your being morally upright? Being different, doesn’t make anyone demonic. The fact is that even people, who might be demonic, do not go for a public display of it. Why is my supposed demonic power always in the glare of the public?

Being free minded and distinct has made me to ask certain pressing questions, ordinary people cannot ask, making my brand an invaluable material that continues to be of befit to our nation, our youth.

The reasons our society has seized to grow are because, a lsot of Nigerian youth are docile, they accept everything they are told and swallow hook line and sinker, and they can’t sit up and make decisions for themselves. They are so afraid to ask questions even though everything is obviously going wrong.

The society is being raped by the government, but no one is aggressively asking questions. The youth have allowed their fates to be tied to leaders who in a free world do not exist. If only Nigerian youth could imbibe exceptional minds like the gothic minds and refuse to be subjected to frivolous societal rules. If only they knew, they can succeed with just freedom on their palm. Our society currently needs people who wouldn’t just settle for anything. People with the ability to decide for themselves what is true and what’s not. We need people with independent minds, despite the societal cord that ties everyone together.

But it is quite pathetic that intelligent and reasonable people have out of fear committed this nation into the hands of miscreants and misfits. The gurus at home and in diaspora should come return in search of freedom. The most sorry part, is how these evil perpetrators often meet to scheme new ideas while those who should be at the helm of affairs are nowhere to be found.

For a better society, people need to take responsibility, as it is the foundation of any leadership. When people run away from what they should do and lose hope to power mongers, then things might never change. We all must be willing to participate, only then can we push out leaders who are only in power to protect their own interest, and not for the freedom of the rest of us.

Also, there needs to be attitudinal change. Things need to revolve. Our youth need to think aggressively (not negatively). There is no need to be paralyzed with fear.

In this journey and quest for freedom, brainteasers need to come together and form alliance. There is a need for networking amongst like minds, to draw a plan and strategize on how this nation can properly run. Structures should be set up to automatically work against any bad governance or leadership. I Advocate for gothism, even as I remain gothic. This is my plea, a plea from the heart. Fight for your freedom today.

May D - I started As A Dancer

Mayokun Awodumila, aka, May D is a native of Ekiti State, but grew up in Lagos State, Nigeria with his family, 4 brothers and their parents.

A graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Lagos (Unilag), May D released his first singles ‘’Cool Temper’’ and ‘’Soundtrack’ in 2011 to an appreciative level of positive reviews from the industry insiders.

Later that year, he featured on Psquare`s Invasion Album, collaborating on ‘Chop My Money’ which also featured Akon on the remix and on ‘Do as I Do’ which also had Tiwa Savage on it.

In early 2012, he released his second singles ‘Ile Ijo’, ‘Gat Me High’, and ‘You Want 2 Know Me’, which featured PSquare.

In February 2013, he released ‘So Many Tinz’, which is the official last single before the release of his album.

In this interview with DailyPost, May D speaks about his entire career; how he started, and the journey so far. He also speaks about his Meiden Album launch which holds on May 26, at the ThisDay Dome , Abuja. The event is organized by Abuja number one event Manager, Kehinde Adegbite, Mr. Yankee. The beginning

I started as a dancer, with the same name; May D. May D is actually from the name, Mayokun Dumila – May D. There is this usual hurdle associated with any new venture one embarks on. We all went through the same hustle, and we still “dey try”

I started out as a dancer in my secondary school, Kings’ College, Lagos. When I got into the University, Unilag, I started music professionally and even though it was tough because I was in a group facing different challenges, I persevered. There were ups and downs , but after several years, things took shape and here I am today, by God’s grace.

Inspiration

I take everything around me as a source of inspiration in making music. Life is art, and if you know life, you can make several lyrics out of it. Everything seen, touched, and taste should inspire one. I’m always inspired by what I see.

The walk, the dance

Those majestic and flexible walk in most of my videos, especially the twisting of fingers and the leg dance were all learnt in the past, while I was doing dance. Like I said, I started out as a dancer back in my secondary school days, and with all humility, I’ll say I was pretty good at it. So, in a way, that’s just me bringing to the fore what I have always been good at doing.

Music

I will categorize my type of music as pop/R&b. At the moment, I have a number of singles. I had my first singles, ‘’Cool Temper’’ and ‘’Soundtrack’ in 2011 to an appreciative level of positive reviews from the industry insiders.

Later that year, I featured on Psquare`s Invasion Album, collaborating on ‘Chop My Money’ which also featured Akon in the remix and on ‘Do as I Do’ which also had Tiwa Savage on it.

My relationship with Peter and Paul is still very cordial. We owe nothing against each other. It was only time for me to just be on my own. I saw that it was time to begin to direct my own ship; aside that, nothing personal.

The Industry

The industry is very big at the moment, and highly competitive. One has to be above board by churning out creative stuff to measure up to standard. I have just started, and we have to just take it to another level.

Abuja Album Launch

The Abuja Album Launch will be my maiden album concert and we plan to give Abuja a night to remember. I expect the people of Abuja to show the usual love they have always shown towards me. It’s my second home -you know. The official launch holds on May 26 at the Thisday Dome, Abuja. I just expect the usual love from Abuja people. I shall be having other big names in the industry performing with me. 2Face, Davido, Iyanya, Olamide,K-Switch, Reminisce, Gandoki, Klint Da drunk, Emma Nyra and a host of others will join me at the concert.

Advice

My advice is directed to all aspiring musicians. They should understand that life is practically an Ecosystem. To survive, you must keep struggling. Keep doing your thing until it’s your time. You can do it. It’s your dream and no one else’s. Keep the positive dreams glowing and work towards it. Don’t sit down there, thinking that your dream will come to you; you can only go to your dream. If May D, Iyanya, 2Face and others can make it, then you have no doubt. All the best.

MattMax sets to direct Big Dada’s King Kong VIDEO

South African based Hip-hop star, Big Dada has said that the music industry in Nigeria is undoubtedly one of the biggest in the world. Dada who returned to Nigeria to begin the shootings of his hit track, titled, King Kong, featuring T-Cross and Oral Cool this Friday, has lauded the effort of young Nigerians who despite the unfavorable environment have continued to excel.

Contrary to people’s expectation that the fast growing rapper would move his crew to South Africa for his ongoing video project, the Bosses Boss affirmed that Nigeria is a beautiful place, with all the talents to conclude work on his video. He said that being a patriotic Nigerian, it becomes necessary to return to the country to work with creative hands in the industry. He also affirmed that Nigeria has the largest entertainment market in Africa and second to the United States in the world, believing that despite the competition in the country, originality would sell any determined artiste to the world. According to Dada, South Africa may be a beautiful place to shoot one’s video, yet it cannot compete with Nigeria in the entertainment business. “ I live in South Africa, I do music there, but you can’t ignore Nigeria when it comes to the real entertainment business in the world. South Africa is still a baby compared to Nigeria in this business. I’m proud to be a Nigerian,” Dada said.

Presently, Dada’s hit track, King Kong is enjoying airplay on different radio stations across the country and in South Africa. Dada will commence his video project on Friday, and will be directed by Matt Max, a renowned video director who directed Olamide’s ‘Stupid love’, Dona Divas’ Gaga, and a host of others.

Fred Amata At 50 (Part 2): BATTLE OF THE STARS (Novelty Football Match - Team ex-Super Eagles Vs Team Nollywood ; Governor Fashola To Captain Fred's Team Nollywood)

As you may already be aware, Nollywood is marking the 50th birthday of one of its legends, FRED AMATA, with THREE star studded events.

The first event, AN EVENING WITH FRED AMATA, which was hosted by City People Magazine, took place on the 4th of May 2013 at Abibiz Restaurant & Lounge in V.I.

I attended the classy event and observed that it was well attended by heavyweights in the entertainment industry and Fred's beautiful beau, Mor Okonkwo, was there to support him. City People also presented Fred with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The pièce de résistance of the evening was when Mr Zik Zulu Okafor got up to give a speech about Fred Amata. Zik Zulu, a well respected orator, eloquently delivered a eulogy about Fred and the entire Amata family that would make historians envious. He was given a well deserved standing ovation.

Now, here comes the second part of Fred Amata's 50th birthday event, BATTLE OF THE STARS which will give to charity and honor Nollywood Icon Fred Amata on his 50th birthday.

The actor, producer and director is kicking off his birthday celebrations with the country’s foremost kicking game – Football. In a game tagged “Battle Of The Stars” Fred is recruiting two killer teams.

The first team is Team Nollywood which is made up of Fred Amata, Ekpenyong Bassey, Okey Bakassi, Basorge Tariah, AY comedian, Moses Inwang, Francis Onwochei, Sexy Steel, Segun Arinze, Baba Dee, Frank Edoho, Uncle Speed and many others.

The second team is Team ex-Super Eagles and is made up of all the ex-Super Eagles stars who won the 1994 Nations Cup.

Fred Amata and his star-studded Team Nollywood have been practising at the National Stadium in Surulere with their trainer, Coach Shuaibu Amodu, to prep them up against threats like Kanu Nwankwo, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, Henry Nwosu, Ike Shorumu, Jonathan Akpoborie, Emma Babayaro, Austin Eguavoen, Peter Rufai and a host of ex-Super Eagles’ Players, who are already excited about the challenge.

Saving the best for last: The Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Babatunde Raji Fashola is also going to captain Fred's Team Nollywood and double as player at the star-studded novelty match! Yessur!!!

The match is slated for Wednesday, 15th May 2013 at Campus Square.

CONCEPT OF OGE PHOTO SPEAK FILMED SHOOT: Time! Time! Time! Ticking Away! Time Waits For Noone! This Concept Was Culled From Oge's Name, Ogechi.

Happy New Year everyone. As a New Year gift to you all for your continued love and support, talented actress, Oge Okoye, wants you to be the first to view her filmed photo speak before she writes her book, as the images from this concept depict the life of Oge.

We achieved 12 looks in 3 long days and everything was filmed. Unfortunately, we don't have the video at present, as we are still waiting for E4 PR's photographer, Moussa Moussa, who also did the filming, to finish editing it. We have therefore decided to release the photos first and the video will follow afterwards.

The Story Behind Oge Photo Speak Filmed Shoot

Oge Photo Speak Filmed Shoot begins with a presentation by Ambassador Utchay Odims, intimating the audience about what we are about to do. After this, Oge is filmed relaxing in her hotel until she receives a phone call from myself telling her that I'm at the reception and on my way up to see her. She is meant to travel in 2 hours and her taxi driver is already on his way to collect her. As she sits in her room waiting for me to arrive, her eye catches the clock and she looks confused as she looks at her wristwatch and then back at the clock. She suddenly realises that she forgot to set her wristwatch back to Nigerian time after she returned from London two days before and as London is an hour behind, she is on the verge of missing her flight. She grabs her bags and races out to her car, not realising that her perfume, hairbrush and one glass slipper have fallen out of her hand luggage. We miss each other by a whisker.

When Oge approached me to do a photo shoot for her based on time, it was easy for me to conjure up different themes based on some of my past observations of her, although I had no idea at the time that we'd be doing this photo shoot. Others, I just reeled off the top of my head as the euphoria of bringing them to life engulfed me.

I had originally intended doing seven looks for each day of the week, but was multi-tasking at the time Oge pinged me, as I was travelling in two days, so I typed my reply so fast that I inadvertently reeled out 11 looks and as you may have guessed, it wasn't easy to pick 4 looks to drop. The 12th look was a 'pleasant mistake' - will explain later :)

The filmed shoot of Oge almost missing her flight and her items falling out of her bag as she ran to the aircraft is actually a true life incident that happened when we were going to the US to film Turning Point. I missed her by a whisker and we depicted that time lapse in the video.

What Oge is depicting in this filmed photo speak is that she wants to achieve as much as she can in life because time waits for noone. The word, time, is very prominent in this photo speak, which is the reason you see Oge constantly looking at either a clock or her wristwatch. I also came up with the idea of the glass slipper falling out of her hand luggage because just like Cinderella, time waits for noone. When Cinderella had to leave, she fled, leaving her glass slipper behind. As the glass slipper idea came into my head, the Cinderella Gone Bad photo speak theme naturally followed and as I planned Oge's Beauty Shoot make-up, I saw her in my mind's eye exactly the way I wanted her to look.

These photos are meant to speak for themselves, hence the name, Oge Photo Speak. I must admit however, that it wasn't easy bringing my themes to life with a brand new crew. It was my first time doing such a sophisticated shoot without Princess Amayo, who understands me so well that she completes my sentences as I start doling out my requests; so understandably, I was a bit irritable at first. However, after successfully going over the hurdles of the first day, I began to bond with and enjoy my new crew and helped out a lot to get my desired results. I am a perfectionist and am set in my ways about what I want. I always insist on the crew looking casual as well while working, so nobody outshines the star. Oge was the star here and I set a good example by dressing very casual, so that all focus would be on just our star.

Talented Nollywood actress Chioma Akpotha, has joined the league of producers and produced a movie titled ‘On Bended Knees’.

The movie which has a Christian theme, is about a man, Pastor Reuben (Seun Akindele) who is fiercely passionate about the things of God and is committed to the church. But this does not go down well with his wife Kemi (Chioma Akpotha) who has to remind him that he is also a husband as well as a pastor. Temptation comes in form of a dark, handsome stranger (Chet Anekwe), who becomes attracted to her. Secrets are opened, hidden pasts are unearthed and Reuben finds himself torn between his love for his wife & his devotion to the church. Who wins this epic battle?

The project was executive produced by Chioma Akpotha and produced in conjunction with Emem Isong. Directing was by Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen with story and screenplay by Uduak Oguamanam. The movie stars Chioma Akpotha, Seun Akindele, Chet Anekwe, Francis Onwochie, Memry Savanhu, Sylvia Oluchi and Chukwudi Orji.

'On Bended Knees' will premiere on the 5th of May 2013 at Silverbird Cinemas at the Ikeja Mall. It promises to be a wholesome, grand affair.

AY Comedian's Witness Account Of The Shocking Bullying Of Chioma Akpotha Exposes 'Journalist' Yemisi As A Sadist With Tribalism Issues

What 'crime' did Chioma Akpotha commit to deserve defamation of character with deliberate untruths? Answer: she is Igbo. Journalists are meant to be learned and exposed, hence it beggars belief that one can display such uncouth behaviour in this day and age when even racism is almost extinct. Please read AY Comedian's witness account below, of the incident between Chioma Akpotha and 'journalist' Yemisi, and note why it is very important to always get both sides of the story. AN OPEN RESPONSE TO VANGUARD’S CHIOMA CHUKWUKA’S PLANE DRAMA REPORT. WRITTEN BY AY

Recalling what happened between Chioma Akpotha and Yemisi (The Vanguard reporter) on the AMAA flight from Port Harcourt, one would have expected a cultured woman to be contrite and apologize forthwith, since everybody is error-prone. I crave your indulgence to say this not because the former is a movie star and the latter a journalist. More so, I dread not to raise my voice for the truth and my compassion against injustice.

It was quite unfortunate to read a report from today’s Vanguard Online in favour of Yemisi (their own staff), as against Chioma Akpotha who was publicly insulted alongside EVERY Igbo speaking individual on that flight, by Yemisi. Besides, if some of us do have the franchise to suffer disharmony with our personal values, I still want to believe that in reporting a case, Professional Journalism should keep it quite professional by not identifying with any side in an issue of this manner. But this is obviously not the case of the Vanguard reporter who wrote the story between Chioma Akpotha and Yemisi. The reporter in question has proven to me that fiction can sometimes make a better job of the truth and an exaggerated relativism.

How could you in every sense of professionalism start a story involving your fellow reporter and Chioma Akpotha by saying “Like most Nollywood stars, Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha is not given to pretence. She’s always ready to vibrate and return fire-for-fire. Last Sunday evening was not different. Smarting from the frustration and exhaustion that greeted everyone after the AMAA awards and the endless wait at the Port-Harcourt International Airport, Chioma boarded the evening flight back to Lagos, determined to cause another stir on board”.

DETERMINED to cause another stir on board? I am 100 per cent convinced that even a blind reader could perceive that your biased and fully loaded rifle was well targeted at the Nollywood actress from the very beginning of your report. My dear journalist (the almighty one with the ability to make and kill the career that was given by God), what happened to being objective and giving equal space to all sides in your newsgathering? So the best you could do to justify your false report was to hide the identity of the Vanguard reporter by concluding thus: “A quarrel ensued between herself and a Lagos based female journalist, which caused the actress to loose [sic] her temper in a manner that attracted the attention of everyone on board. But for the fact that she was on board, the visibly angry Chioma would have done the unexpected.

She claimed that the journalist was rude to her, adding that most painfully, she “called me Igbo bitch and all that’. I wouldn’t blame her because AMAA brought us together. I can conveniently pay her salary,” she fumed. Who cares!”

Now would you really like to know who cares? AY cares! And yes I was on that same flight like many other industry people including a good number of foreigners who flew in to be a part of AMAA 2013. The poor Chioma only succeeded in getting her multiple visa of becoming a “LOUSY BITCH” when Yemisi was brushing through the president of Eko International Film Festival, Mr. Hope Obioma Opara. She was obviously in a hurry to make the exit when the flight touched ground. All Chioma said to her was “take it easy they are yet to open the exit door”. She brushed her way through to two other ladies who sat in front; the next word that came out of her mouth was “LOUSY IGBO GIRLS”. Apparently, Chioma heard what she said and asked “did you just refer to me as a Lousy Igbo girl? The best response from your Yemisi was “what if I did?” (I am so sure she wouldn’t ask an Angelina Jolie or a Kim Kardashian that same question if she were to be on the same flight with any of them. Perhaps she would have started twitting immediately, saying “AMAA things…. Kim just asked me to take it easy, they are yet to open the exit door. Wow wow wow 2013 my year of exit opening doors”). But definitely not to a Nollywood multiple awards winning happily married actress with kids. Chioma Akpotha, Grace Ama, and Nollywood producer Chinwe Egwuagu were still busy playing catch-up with Yemisi when she went on target again like the Boston Bombers to launch another verbal bullet. This time she called them ‘LOUSY BITCHES’. Chioma Akpotha managed to get off the bomb scene through the help of some of us who were on hand to stop the detonation of further bombs by Yemisi. Not even knowing she was a journalist from The Vanguard Newspapers, Chioma said “I will allow my God to fight you. It’s even possible that it is an Igbo person that is paying your salary. I wouldn’t blame you because AMAA brought us together. I am sure that I can convincingly pay your salary”.

For your information, Chioma Akpotha did not deserve all she got from your colleague ‘Yemisi’, whom you have proudly disguised or baptized to become a Lagos based Journalist. Who knows? Maybe by tomorrow “Miss Lagos based Journalist” could go through another baptism of fire to become “According to a reliable source”, all in the name of bringing down a fellow creation to the excitement of your colleague who ought to go to God and ask for forgiveness. I hope she did not forget to let you into the corrective measures I gave to her? I am not a fan of anyone with uncultured attitude and public display of visible arrogance. Kindly ask her to remind you, so that I will not fail to be on your list of the next set of career-killing candidates. Or should I tell you the opinion of others concerning Yemisi on that same flight? I guess there won’t be any need for that, because I am very sure of us having many more LOUSY BITCHES cut across the Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, Ghanaians, South Africans and Americans on that AMAA flight. I would intentionally skip the question of the speedy hibernation in tribal cocoons, which is indeed unfortunate even as we try to push for a more detribalized mindset. (Please don't mistake me for an Igbo man or take it that I am fighting for my “IGBO LOUSY BITCHES”. I am a full-blooded Yoruba Man like Yemisi)

Finally, my dear Madam Yemisi, kindly permit me to point out that contrition is a sign of strength, not weakness. To my “Amiable honorable I must defend my colleague till death”, I would like to plead with you in your capacity as a widely followed public reporter, to kindly grant objectivity its rightful place in your reports. ‘A lie can travel halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.’ But three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth. May we bear in mind that the Internet and social media have come to stay. We now have millions of followers who would at least hear our own side of the story before we are judged or criticized.

Charles Novia - AMAA 2013: ‘THE MORE THINGS SEEM TO CHANGE…’

‘Charles, you know you have to write a review about this year’s AMAA or you will be seen as biased, not after you have reviewed the AMVCA’ a prominent Film Maker said to me as we arrived Yenogoa by road. I had already made up my mind weeks before to do such, even if I was in a somewhat precarious position; my movie ‘Alan Poza’ was nominated in two categories . If we didn’t win anything ( and eventually we didn’t) some might misconstrue my review as ‘sour grapes’ rather than the honest and unbiased opinion I have chosen to write.

(‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn’, says Clark Gable in the movie ‘Gone with the Wind’ and I align with his phrase.)

With all sense of propriety, I will not in anyway compare the two awards. That is left for the viewers and readers to do but I will only make appropriate objective commentaries as witnessed by me.

The show started with a group of dancers who gave a good account of themselves in their choreography of the AMAA theme song. The dancers captured the essence of Africa in their dance and the theme song itself had a pulsating multi-African feel to the mix. This was followed by a brief reel of late Nollywood actors who passed on in the last year.

The compere of the night AY, the stand up comedian, made an entrance in a Power Bike and cracked our ribs with a few hilarious jokes. It was a good thing that AY was on board for the show as an otherwise lukewarm event would have turned out to be tepid if not for his rib-crackers.

There were a lot of the ‘Notice Me’ people, especially the ladies in their evening gowns, strutting all over the hall, much to the amusement or annoyance of many people. I don’t know if they were looking for seats or if they were all over the place, ensuring that we all got a glimpse of their evening outfits. Of course, some of the outfits were eye-popping or head-shaking, depending on one’s point of view. I remember AY threw a barb at one of the actresses from the ‘Asaba Nollywood’ slant, when he called her ‘Lady Gaga’ because of the huge, screaming mop of coloured wig she had on. The actress in question, either good-naturedly or daftly, waved at the recognition.

‘Who’s that Lady in the glittering pink gown?’ asked one of the foreign visitors who sat behind me. ‘She should sit down a bit! Blimey!’ He was pointing to Ibinabo Fiberisima, the Actors Guild President, who seemed to be all over the place. She wasn’t the only one. Others with a sense of self-importance equally struggled for strutting space.

The Executive Governor of Bayelsa State gave the opening speech. I thought the Federal Government in the ‘Rebranding Nigeria’ campaign had jettisoned all the protocol recognition intros by Government officials? His Excellency spent about ten minutes ‘recognizing’ those present in the hall, that it was a wonder he didn’t acknowledge the presence of the Hall Cleaners!. And his accompanying speech was so long that it was more of a drone after a while. In the speech which took the better part of thirty minutes, he made some good points about encouraging the film industry and also building a Film City Centre in Bayelsa to boost the Tourism Potentials of the state. Governor Dickson has an authoritative booming voice and boring aspects of his speech were made up with his style of speaking, which some people found fascinating.

If the Governor’s Speech seemed drone-like, then the next speech by the South African High Commissioner takes the biscuit for ‘boring’.(Whoops! There goes my SA visa, I am sure!) The Diplomat just kept talking and talking, sometimes in inaudible or inarticulate tones, that a lot of us in the hall mercifully found solace in our smart phones for company. He spoke for about twenty minutes and just as we all were heaving a sigh of relief, yet another Speaker climbed the podium! Chai! We wan die!

It was the Culture and Tourism Minister, High Chief Edem Duke, who is a very powerful speaker. This night was no exception but he must have been bitten by the ‘long speech’ bug and spoke ex tempore for close to twenty minutes as well.

Could someone please tell the AMAA Producers that next time, speeches by Government officials should not be more than five minutes per person and not more than two, if it comes to that?

Peace Anyiam Osigwe gave her own speech in subdued tones and the reason for that became clear when she asked us all to observe a minute silence for the late Entertainment Lawyer, our dear good friend and brother, Efere Ozako who passed on a couple of days before AMAA. That brought tears to the eyes of many in the hall who knew and loved Efere.

The co-compere, Ama K Abebrese came up on the stage to join AY. Her voice was hoarse and grating on the microphone and she apologized for losing her voice to the audience. It was difficult to judge her outing as a compere because of her lost voice but one would give her kudos for the bravery of carrying on, despite this setback.

The performance by a South African Flute-blowing group, though interesting, was marred by annoying technical issues which was intermittent the whole night for many performing acts. One of the Flute artistes got the hall reeling in laughter when he said he learned a new dance called ‘Azuntu’, a mis-pronunciation of ‘Azonto’. !

The special guest of AMAA this year was acclaimed Hollywood Black director and actor, Mario Van Peebles. I am one of those who grew up inspired by Mario’s movies and he came on stage dressed in a white Kaftan ,all hyper and warm. He gave a great, motivating speech which stirred a lot of hearts. AY took a jibe at him for wearing odd green sneakers with his Kaftan!.

There were performances by Waje, who has improved tremendously in her stagecraft and Timi Dakolo who was the star of the night. My God! There isn’t a voice in Nigeria like Timi’s and there isn’t an inspiring singer and performer in his class like him! Timi had the crowd clapping on and on and got both visitors to Nigeria and citizens all up, all our hearts swollen with pride, as he rendered a special song of his for Nigeria. Timi Dakolo is good! An ace singer.

Funny Bone, the comedian was quite hilarious. He was followed by the ‘son-of-the-soil’ comedian, G-Bones, who also maintained the comic tempo.

Dakore Akande came up on stage as the third compere of the night. She was elegant in her looks and tried to make the most of the glitches in the programme with her Ghanaian male co-compere. And there were glitches! Microphones going off, sound systems and teleprompters messing up, and other avoidable impediments.

One commendable innovation AMAA brought this year, was the introduction of many of the new, promising actors of the so-called ‘new Nollywood’ school, as award Presenters. To me, that was quite symbolic. A perfect suggestion that as Nollywood loses its old guard, a fresh and vibrant pool of new talents are in the wings, carrying on with the dream. It was heart lifting to see the likes of Beverly Naya, Belinda Effah, Omoye Uzamere, Kemi Lala Akindoju, Wole Ojo, Ivie Okudaye, Uti Nwachukwu, OC Ukeje an many others up on the podium.

The last performance for the night was by Flavour who got the crowd dancing with his hit songs. Curiously though, he strode off stage abruptly as his song was coming to an end as if to say ‘I don do wetin una pay me for. I don go’. That was the cue many in the hall needed to also take their leave and the last two categories had a half-empty hall as many tired guests had left.

The show ended at a few minutes past four in the morning! A seven hour event, which with proper planning, could have been wrapped up within three hours! There’s still a lot to be done in that regard by the AMAA producers. There were needless pauses and long waits in between presentations and a few people were nodding off to sleep in the hall when the show dragged on and on.

There’s a feeling of Déjà vu one gets each time one attends the Africa Movie Academy Awards in Bayelsa State. The State has no airport and so, the guests are transported by road from the Port-Harcourt airport to Yenogoa in a two hour journey. I would advise AMAA to contract a central logistics company or directorate to handle the grueling logistics for future events, instead of the weary-eyed officials we see yearly who run helter-skelter to sort out logistics issues, to their credit.. It is about time to outsource that department and that’s all I would say about that, with all brotherly love to Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, my good friend and sister, whose vision for AMAA has been sustained for almost a decade.

It is heart-warming to note that Bayelsa State has built more hotels since the first edition of AMAA held in Bayelsa nine years ago, with most of the hotels built as a tourism boost to AMAA. The brand image of Bayelsa State is majorly intertwined with the AMAA brand but there seems to be a major disconnect between the organizational organs of both parties. There is a lot of work to be done in that regard but I must commend Bayelsa State for being a faithful host of the event these past years, even though there’s much to be desired. Building an airport in Yenagoa, for starters, is long overdue. Mercifully, The Governor promised that it would be done by next year, in his speech.

If AMAA aspires to be a world class award ceremony tailored after the Oscars, as most of its screening and jury processes are, then it should ensure that the stage management, logistics and event production for AMAA must be at per with its aspirations. Next year, AMAA will celebrate ten years. A ten-year old organization such as AMAA cannot be taken lightly anymore. It is an institution and can only get better if many of its activities are properly outsourced to the right people or companies. The movie industry in Nigeria and parts of Africa have supported AMAA wholly these past few years and will continue to support it but its about time AMAA takes a long look at itself and surpass our expectations. AMAA is no longer a solitary, annual event for the African Film Industry. It has competition; and one which went all out to make a point in their first outing too! Very soon, we all would either be looking forward to ‘AMAA-zing’ awards or one with a touch of ‘magic’ which could polarize our loyalties if we all don’t get it right.

We present the photograph of Beyonce performing at the Superbowl half-time show in New Orleans on Sunday evening that has taken the internet by storm.

I'd initially wanted to ignore Kola Boof's email to me until another blogger told me that she also sent him a similar email. How come she hasn't shut down the NUMEROUS sites that have written about her describing her in words that I cannot even print? My very few posts about her are TAME compared to theirs. Or maybe she thinks that Nigerians are backward or something? She even threatened that "my image and reputation will suffer"! I can't stop laughing! Whose image and reputation is already suffering? Mine or that of a shameless forty-something year old Kola that has publicly bragged about how she f****d a 24-year-old boy young enough to be her son, how she has 4 boyfriends, how proud she is of being a mistress...also proudly regaling tales of her escapades as Osama bin Laden's mistress and how glad she was to rub things in his wife's face...not forgetting her false declaration to have slept with Djimon Hounsou for the sole purpose of destroying his marriage?

Madam Kola, I'm only giving you the cheap publicity that you so yearn to score for yourself, so you should be thanking me instead of ranting unintelligibly. Finally, while shutting down my website, make sure that you also shut down the MILLIONS of websites that have written about you and used your PUBLIC images...okay Ma? Mchewww! Idiorikoriwa!
