JUMIA is the first African company to win the World Retail Award
African startup received most important retail award at the World Retail Congress in Paris

October 10th, 2013 - JUMIA, Nigeria’s #1 shopping destination, won “The Best Retail Launch of the Year” at the World Retail Congress in Paris yesterday. Through this distinction, JUMIA is the first African company to have won the most important retail award worldwide. They did this ahead of all other offline, online and developed market retailers of the world, other nominees in this category were Hedonism Wines, Presso, Quem disse, Berenice?, t.riciclo and Zalora.  The event is run by the publishing company EMAP and discusses issues affecting the international retail industry; covering core retail in all segments issues as well as social, economic, political and ethical concern. Previous winners include top brands such as ASOS, Migros, NikeTown, Woolworths or Zappos.com. JUMIA offers their products online, via a mobile app or on cash delivery spots - leapfrogging traditional retail in Africa.

“We are delighted with the wide international reach of this year’s winners and that for the first time, we are presenting an award to an African retailer,” said Ian McGarrigle, chairman of the World Retail Congress. According to World Retail Congress’s jury, JUMIA sets the highest benchmark when it comes to retailing in Africa: their excellency in online marketing, IT and operations are key drivers for JUMIA’s sharp growth rates and the company’s rising brand awareness throughout the whole of Africa.

Tunde Kehinde and Raphael Afaedor, co-founders of Jumia: “We owe this landmark fete to the Nigerian market who since day one have supported us all the way through the very encouraging feedback and patronage; we clearly wouldn’t be honored this way without them. This also shows that Jumia Nigeria has risen beyond the ranks and has gone far beyond a start-up company with even more greater heights yet to be achieved. Amazingly, recently there was a poll by a notable organization for start-up’s in Nigeria and Jumia clearly out of that list, some more proof to that the market and industry players have come to recognize our position and impact we have made in this market. There are bigger plans for the customer and this will remain our focus”.

Jeremy Hodara, managing director African Internet Holdings: “This is a historic moment to us and I hope, also for the whole of Africa. When we started JUMIA last year we had the goal to enable safe, convenient and stress-free shopping experiences in Nigeria. Now one year later, we deliver products to hundred thousands of customers in over six countries every day. Only thanks to our incredible teams and partners, who made online shopping in Africa easy. Madonna University Alumni Association (MUAA) Launches Magazine, Awards Deserving Members + The Public, Says Madonna University is the Best and Most Affordable Private University in Nigeria.

All is now set for the second edition of the Madonna University Alumni Association, MUAA’s awards ceremony which has been scheduled to hold in Abuja.

The event tagged, "MUAA Awards 2013/MUAA Magazine Launch" and slated for October 12, at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel Abuja is the first of its kind since the inception of the Association.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, the National President of the Association, Mr Chima Achu, said some members of the Association who have contributed towards its growth as well as other outstanding members who deserve commendation in various fields of endeavours will be honoured at the event.

Others to be honoured are members of the public who have also contributed remarkably to the growth of the nation’s economy, irrespective of their fields.

Mr Achu further disclosed that the award will be based on an initial criteria set by the Association to evaluate performances of the awardees,  adding that the awards will be based on merit, as the Association will not allow any form of inducement as it’s the case in most awards in Africa.

The President had further divulged that the maiden edition of the Association's magazine, MUAA Magazine, shall be officially unveiled and launched during the event. He said that coming up with a maiden edition of MAUU Magazine was a tremendous achievement and a dream accomplished by the executives and other members of the Association.

He said, “The magazine will celebrate excellence, hard-work and successes of our members. It will also showcase efforts by the National Executive Committee and various chapters in advancing the course of the vibrant Association. People can say it’s an ordinary magazine, but it is something we have been working hard to achieve. For years, we have tried to get this done. This is because it is one masterpiece that will unite the activities of our members globally.

‘’With over 23,000 members worldwide and with our Headquarters in London, United Kingdom, we have so much to celebrate.’’ He added.

Meanwhile, prominent Nigerians who will be honoured at the event include; former Governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezife who will be receiving a life time achievement award; former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Chief Akin Olujimi will be receiving a Public Service Award, DG of Institute of Leadership Training, Mr. Afowori will be honoured as well.

According to the President, event’s Red Carpet will open by 3pm, while the main event shall follow suit.

Speaking on the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Association President said, the issue of decay in the educational system is something that has happened systematically over a period of time. He said it was a known fact that budgetary allocation to education in the last 25 years has been quite less than the standard set by the United Nations, hence ‘’ you don’t expect this current administration to mop up those lapses just instantly. It will take time to get this done, as it requires systematic approach.’’

He also stressed on the need to declare an emergency in the educational sector in order to bail it out of the lapses of several years.  He however appealed to ASUU to sheathe its sword and reopen the nation’s universities. ‘’It’s imperative to note that dialogue remains the better option; hence they should go back to classes, while dialogue continues. Asking the Federal Government to cough out almost 3 trillion naira as a last option is a wild goose chase and totally unrealistic. The amount is equivalent to a nation’s total budget and not realistic at all’’ He said.

Debunking the erroneous belief that Madonna University is expensive, and not affordable, Achu said, ‘’ I must tell you that Madonna University remains the cheapest of Nigerian Private Universities. Madonna University’s fee is not even up to half a million. If compared to other Universities fees that remain above one million naira per session, it is crystal clear that the school is very considerate even with the quality of education it delivers. You need to pay to get quality. Madonna University is the best private University in Nigeria and to have its fees below half a million is commendable. You don’t expect the school to hire Professors both within and outside Nigeria, and they won’t take care of them.’’

Speaking on the school’s stringent disciplinary actions against Madonna University students which most of the students appear not to be comfortable with, the President said that the school governing council had provided basic rules, which he said were not stringent enough compared to other universities, therefore any student who signs under those rules and accepts to study in the school must continue to obey the rules.  He said ‘’during admission, you are meant to go through the school’s rules and sign that you will abide by them. There were no such rules when we were in the University in those days, but because the school was a little liberal, students abused the opportunity, and different cult groups emerged. In order to keep the good image of the school, and as a Catholic school, it had to put in place some basic rules which I believe is working. Now, all students are meant to live on camp, and if you are to leave the school any time, you must state the reason why you are leaving. We have military men and mobile police everywhere in the school just to ensure that the University’s rules are kept.’’

On quality of graduates, the Association President said Madonna University has received commendations from different organizations for producing the best hands into the Nigerian job markets, citing examples to include the CEO of African Achiever Award whom he said was a product of Madonna University. He said Zenith bank has equally sent a commendation letter to the school for their products. ‘’ Definitely, Madonna University is one of the best Universities in Nigeria’’

Meanwhile, speaking on the second edition of the Madonna University Alumni Association, MUAA’s awards ceremony which has been scheduled to hold in Abuja, the President said the event is tagged, "MUAA Awards 2013/MUAA Magazine Launch" and slated for October 12, at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Sheraton Hotel Abuja. He said the 2013 edition is the first of its kind since the inception of the Association.

He disclosed further that some members of the Association who have contributed towards its growth as well as other outstanding members who deserve commendation in various fields of endeavours will be honoured at the event.

Charlyboy Writes His Obituary, Asks People To Write Theirs

He titles this one ‘’My Obituary’’.
...His line of thought in this ‘out of the world’ article vividly captures everyman’s essence in this world. He asks the pertinent question of living forever by writing one’s name in the sand of time.  He reflects over the absurdity of life, using his late cousin, Emeka as a cynosure of his views.   Read on please..

Right about now, some of the readers will question the sense in capturing and casting this type of crazy captions for my articles. I only write for those who are patient enough to understand the creative beauty of my mind. I write for those who have depth enough to see beyond what they see, those who have a discerning mind.

However, if your curiosity has gotten the better of you, then read on.
I am about to take up a subject no one really wants any part of, but that's alright, this is where our imagination runs amock. For a brief second, imagine this: if your life were to end today, what would your obituary read? Come on; don't get frightened, thinking about your obituary will not kill you.

Nothing escapes the Creator's cycle; not plants, not animals, nor human beings. All living things emerge, gather, spark new life, fall apart and die.

The purpose of all of this is not to scare you about death which is inevitable, but to expose you to a new information or rather, share a certain mindset with you that may help you live with humility and aliveness that only an acceptance of death can release.

'My Obituary' is meant to prick your mind to start being fully conscious of the moments you are alive.

Every moment of our lives, we are knowingly or unknowingly writing a line for our obituary. Every action or inaction provides memories of us to those we eventually leave behind; they are the memories that the people we love and leave behind will want to include in the telling of our life's story.

Within the first quarter of this year, I lost a good friend and cousin, Mr. Emeka Aseme to kidnappers; he was butchered and killed in cold blood. My whole village was not only scandalised by the senseless killing but till today, the 'Blue Lake City' of Oguta has lost the shine it had as a city of bubbling happy go lucky people.

Emeka was a good man who provided employment for hundreds of Oguta people, he was sociable, liked by all and sundry (or so we thought). Even though Oguta had a lot of industrious sons and daughters, Emeka's legacies stand out. He cared about his people, he gave a helping hand, he was sensitive to people's conditions.

Now that he's no more, all we have to say of him (his obituary) are his good deeds, what he contributed to the betterment of his fellow man, especially his kinsmen.

What would yours read like, now that all you know is 'Me, Myself & I'?
What legacy are you living today, is it different from the one you will want to leave behind?
Some people live as if they will be here forever, not giving a hoot about what happens to the next person. If its not their immediate personal/family gratification, it does not concern them.
Mind you, I'm not saying you should not care about your welfare and that of your family o (if you know the AreaFada well you will know that my family remains my ROCK).

However, I still make an ample proportion of my time to fighting the course of our youth and being the Voice of the Voiceless. And this gives me joy and fulfilment. For me, it is what keeps blood flowing in my veins, puts the sparkle in my eyes and springs in my steps...despite the unfavourableness of the terrain. Wetin man go do?

You are the author of your own Obituary, so tell me. Are you writing a history of misery, or a tale of tenacity. Were you inclusive and supportive? Or were you exclusively out for yourself alone, you selfish bloke. Did you lift others up, or did you allow them to knock you down? Did you stay down long enough to recover, or did you stay down complaining and winning. What will your Obituary say about the way you treated people and how you made them feel about themselves. Most importantly what will your Obituary say about how you treated yourself. What will be said about your attitude, how you handled yourself in crisis. Perhaps now is the time to consider how you are living and what you want to be said about you when you are not. Your life provides the content of your Obituary, so my guy, check yourself and park well.

For me, I came I saw, I did it my way , had fun and boned everyone who thought it wasn't possible. that's my Obituary. I'm still here though, for the longer haul!

Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary Gets a Boost as World-class Crèche And Pre-school Opens for children In Abuja On Tuesday

With the fallen standard of education in Nigeria, different private individuals are making relentlessly efforts towards ensuring that the nation’s educational sector is revived and becomes fully operational. This is why a world class Crèche and Preschool centre recently completed in Abuja will be unveiled on the nation’s 53rd independence anniversary.

The school is located in one of the highbrow areas in Abuja, the Federal capital Territory and its completion is the talk of the town.  The comfortable learning atmosphere created and the news its completion had generated in Abuja since the past few weeks prompted some journalists to visit and make a ‘meal’ out of it.  Located in Garki area of the FCT, the school has all the modern facilities that call for people’s attention when driving past.

Speaking to some group of journalists that visited the school upon enquiry whether the school is affordable for average Abuja residents, the administrators  had affirmed that the school was actually meant for hard-working average Nigerians. They affirmed that those who work hard deserve the best, so they can rest later in life.

Speaking on the challenges involved in putting up a school of such standard, the administrators disclosed that it's a difficult task putting up a standard school, considering that most standard school facilities are imported. It was disclosed that the stress as well as the cost of purchase and shipping is even enough to frustrate one's dream of having a standard activities centre/ school.  "We have gone through series of challenges while trying to put this together, but at the end of it all, we have reason to thank God," One of the administrators had divulged.

Speaking about her passion and dream for a world -class school, the proprietress said " I have always dreamt of having something very unique, something that is exceptionally outstanding and can stand the test of time. Ever since I was born, I value cleanliness, and that has informed what you see here today. I know we can equally have the best in this country if we all begin to invest in that direction. This is only a tip of the iceberg."

Placing the commercial value and her passion side by side, she said her passion towards creating the best learning environment for kids outweighs the commercial value, hence it's only a dream accomplished.

Speaking on  security and safety of the kids, she assured thus; " Before you got in here, you must have met some security men at the gate. Besides that, we have CCTV that monitors the entire school, which I also monitor in person. It's wireless and connected to my mobile phone. I can monitor the school activities from anywhere. We are also working on how to connect the CCTV to parents mobile phones, so they can also monitor their kids from their homes or offices. She further clarified that details of parents and guardians shall be kept in the school archives in case of pick-ups.

Adding, the school consultant disclosed that different activities in the school can be played back, using the CCTV, asserting that such gadget makes it easy for even parents to have access to information whenever the need arises.

The administrator had disclosed that for the moment, the school will be accommodating children between 3 months to four years.

Its open house for Crèche and Preschool holds tomorrow, October 1st, 2013 at                                      5b Kabo street, off Ahmadu Bello Way, Garki II, Abuja. Activities begin at 12:00pm.

American Company, Broadstreet PR and Event Promises to Transform Nigerian Companies

At a point that many analysts are of the opinion that Nigerian companies are folding up due to lack of visible plan and near absence of Managerial skills, an American owned company, Broadstreet PR and Event has come to the rescue with the purpose of training and retraining staff in both private and public sectors.

This was made known by its CEO, Andrea Kamara on Saturday at its first Abuja training program held at Krystal Suite, Wuse 2, Abuja for all Krystal suite staff.

The organization, in partnership with Eden Integrated services limited said it was starting its revival effort in the hospitality industry, after having considered the industry as most critical to foreigners who may want to invest in Nigeria. The CEO had affirmed that in a growing economy such as Nigeria's, the hospitality industry plays a major role, hence the need to begin its advance training program from that sector.

While addressing the press on the mission of the organisation into Nigeria, and its extreme importance to Nigerian economy, the Executive Director, Eden Integrated Services Limited , Ambassador Utchay Odims  affirmed that " things are evolving, especially in the 21st century, hence being a graduate is not enough to meet up with the pace at which things are moving. We need to upgrade and live up to the global best practice. This is why this programme appears to be one of the most laudable in recent times. Our partnership in this humanitarian gesture is imperative in order to encourage these foreigners who have embarked on this mission despite the growing security problem that currently confronts our country " Utchay had affirmed.

He further asserted that the aim was to turn around Nigerian companies so they can compete favourably in the international market. He pointed out several ineffective customer services that have over time resulted to poor customer patronage, especially in the hospitality industry, emphasising that after Broadstreet had finished its business tour of Nigeria, there shall be a bigger turn around in the hospitality industry as well as other critical sectors of the economy.

Utchay asserted that the training was not limited to the hospitality industry, but many other organizations that are currently struggling with HR and customer relations issues as well as the day to day running of their business activities. He urged the general public to capitalize on this wonderful humanitarian opportunity to improve on their service delivery.

Responding to questions from journalists, the CEO, Broadstreet PR and event affirmed that  Nigeria was considered first amongst other African countries, having considered its great business potentials. In her words;
"I have a passion for what I do. I'm happy being in Nigeria to help transform the nation's promising and large market. All we are here to do is to close some loopholes that continue to frustrate the nation's economy. We are also here because, Nigeria's market is very critical to the African economy, hence the need to assiduously put things right.

Andre said, "Nigeria to an extent lacks international appeal even with it's human and material potentials. One big issue we have identified to be responsible for some of the challenges was poor customer services. When you travel out of the country, you will find good customer service which is different from what is obtained down here. An improvement in this area as well as effective communication in the various organizational levels will create a better atmosphere for business to thrive. " She said.

Andre said the training will encompass several areas that the Nigerian market and companies have not fully taken advantage of, such as mobile businesses, online booking and a host of others; assuring that at the end of the project, Nigerians will testify. She further disclosed that her company's mission into Africa was purely motivated by the passion to be part of Nigeria's transformation.
Another colleague of Andrea, Stephanie also opined that the Nigerian market needs some improvement for international appeal, so that what is obtained in developed countries can equally be obtained down here.

Speaking further, she said " We must not always think that the best customer service can only be gotten at big companies, as local organizations in Nigeria, especially hotels can equally compete in this regard. Basically, we are here to give out the trainings different organizations need to be able to compete favourably in the global market"

Also speaking, the CEO of Eden Integrated Services Limited, Ambassador David James Egwu, had opined thus " this is a movement, and it has just begun. We are into this partnership because we are all passionate about our dear country Nigeria, and we believe that the quality of services we get at different companies and organizations can be standardised with the introduction of this trainings."
Appealing to journalists, Ambassador Egwu said "the role of the media in this partnership is invaluable," expressing great optimism that the project will get the necessary media support, as both the media and the project were geared towards nation building.

Over 100 staff of Krystal lounge and suit were trained at the Saturday project take off , obviously positioning them with better customer relations techniques.

The training held at the Krystal suit, Wuse 2, Abuja, a gesture most of the staff said came at the right time, especially when most companies are struggling to survive global economic challenges.

I have hyped this movie so much on Facebook and have received similar reviews under my comments that I am at a loss for more words. To make my endorsement more authentic, I have decided to post some of my original comments on Facebook and that of others...which says it all.

  • Egor Efiok Dj Abass, this is honestly the BEST Nigerian romantic comedy I have seen. So rich, classy and fresh. Chris and Chuks...dapper with good diction. Anyone that watches the movie will find it hard not to find Damilola adorable and the Chuks dude SMASHED it. Stella too was hilarious. Kudos to Michelle Bello for a job well done as both producer and director and the best casting ever. It was nice meeting them last night. Still waiting for the photos, Abass, so I can blog and circulate. Flower Girl is a MUST WATCH comedy and gets a 10/10 scoring from me. If you don't believe me, watch it and if you're disappointed, I will refund your money!!!

    • Naimat Timson Whoa what to say this is so far the best romantic movie with a hint of comedy I have seen, it was we'll produced and directed the beginning of the movie bring a warm fussy feeling, which to me was a great sign the producer took her time to screen the movie before she put it out, big up to Michelle Bello. All the cast of the movie were great 2 of them are actor am familiar with their work, Chuks Chukwujekwu was excellent it was the first time I will see him in a movie, I know he will be a global household name in a matter of days. This is movie you'd want to put on replay to watch it over and over again that is how. Thumbs up

      • Egor Efiok You echoed almost my exact words, honest you are so spot on. I've seen Damilola featured on Bella Naija a few times and have met Eku at a few events, but it was my first time seeing them act and my first time seeing the rest of the actors (except Chris Attoh and Patrick Doyle). Chris Attoh never disappoints and it was refreshing to watch him in a comedy; he made me laugh a lot. Chuks left a lasting impression on me and I have no doubt he'd be a global household name like you've predicted. Damilola too. It is hard not to find her adorable. Stella was also Hilarious. Very very beautiful movie, I even shed a tear at the end and went 'awwwwww'! Michelle Bello has proven that she really knows her onions and it makes me proud that a female producer and director can be this thorough with her work. It may sound like an exaggeration when I say I give it a 100% score, but truth is, I can't think of anything to fault about this film. Perfect acting, perfect cast, perfect production. I'm doing a post on it now on my blog and I will offer to refund the money of anyone that honestly doesn't love this film after watching it. Move over Ugly Betty

    • Helen Ayo Sonoiki I've been to a few Nollywood film premieres but this is the first film that I'm actually going to make sure I go and see again! As a paying cinema goer you want to make sure the £7 and 90 mins you've invested won't be a waste: defo not in this case. From the opening credits, it was obvious that attention to detail and production were important to the director/producer. Great script, beautiful scenery, realistic circumstances (NEPA!), talented cast accompanied by great Nigerian music. Although it's a rom com, it's one for both male and female lovers of good films. Highly recommended
