The Puerto Rican-born singer performed a medley of the late diva's songs at the annual award show which was held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles overnight.
J-Lo's high energy performance was notable for the singer's numerous costume changes and highly choreographed dance routine that saw her flipped through the air and triumphantly elevated by a male dancer.
The actress turned singer sung in Spanish while a number of backup dancers gyrated to the music made famous by the Cuban salsa legend Cruz, who died ten years ago at the age of 77.
The performance received a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd with another singer turned actor, Justin Timberlake, filmed applauding exuberantly.
Ahead of the tribute Lopez said she "felt very honoured and a little scared" before adding "I don't think there is anything better for this year's AMA."
