Lupita Nyong'o Is Africa's Personality Of The Year

Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o won the Personality of the Year award at this year's annual MTV Africa Music Awards held on Saturday in Durban, South Africa.

Lupita, who in March won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Oscars for her role as Patsey in the much-acclaimed film 12 Years A Slave, toppled other nominees who included Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Nigerian actress and singer Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, South African comedian, DJ, actor and TV host Trevor Noah and Ivory Coast's soccer star and Africa Footballer of the Year award winner Yaya Toure.
Just last week, Adichie confirmed that the fast-rising Kenyan film and fashion star had bagged the filming rights for her best-selling novel, Americanah. It was also the same week that Lupita was named among the cast of the Star Wars: Episode VII — an American epic space opera franchise centred on a film series created by George Lucas. She joins Gwendoline Christie, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow and former stars of the franchise Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher who are set to reprise their 1977 roles from the original hit film.
This year's edition of the Mamas, hosted by American actor and comedian Marlon Wayans, boasted some show-stopping performances from Trey Songz, Miguel and French Montana. However, lady luck didn't smile for other Kenyan nominees — boy band Sauti Sol and singer Amani.
