Justin Timberlake raised eyebrows at the American Music Awards on Sunday night, when he did a somewhat cringe-making impression of Rihanna's mother.
The 32-year-old singer attempted a Bajan accent as he collected his award for Favorite Male Artist (Soul/R&B) at the ceremony, paying tribute to Monica Braithwaite Fenty's comments about her daughter as she presented her with the Icon Award earlier in the evening.
Beginning his comment, Justin said: 'Can we talk about cute Rihanna's mom is?'
Raising eyebrows: Justin Timberlake impersonated Rihanna's mother's Bajan accent during his acceptance speech at the American Music Awards on Sunday night
Returning to his normal accent, Justin then added: 'I am too. Rihanna, I love you. Congratulations on that award, you totally deserve it.'
But Justin's decision to attempt the accent divided opinions among viewers on Twitter.
One clearly unimpressed viewer wrote: 'Justin Timberlake just shaded Rihanna's mom, that was out of place, unless he knew her personally which clearly he didn't.'
While another added: 'Justin Timberlake is not funny, he hella rude for trying to mock Rihanna's mom lol.'
However, others praised Justin for his attempt at humour, with one writing: 'Justin Timberlake decided to talk about how cute Rihanna's mom is and congratulate her for award aw how can you not love him.'
And another wrote: 'Lol Justin timberlake made me laugh when he was mocking Rihanna's mom accent.'
Earlier in the evening, Monica struggled to control her emotions as she presented her daughter with the Icon Award, telling her: 'Rihanna, I'm so proud of you tonight.'
Monica continued: 'I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one, but tonight I applaud you and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused.

'It's amazing how you always manage to take good from all your experiences. I'm so blessed to be a part of this historic moment.
'I just want to say how proud I am to present to you the first-ever AMA Icon Award.'
And it wasn't just her mother who found the moment moving.
Rihanna opened up as she told her: 'Just about 20 years ago is when I really started making your life a living hell - my annoying little husky man voice, you call it.
'You keep me driven, you keep this special.'
